This is where it all started for us. The Doogs hop variety was found growing wild beside an old railway track that passes through a farm that belongs to a friend of mine… Doogs…
I collected the Rhizomes and attempted to grow them in a test plot on my farm in 2012. 128 pieces of root… It was a learning curve as I didn’t really know what I was doing. I planted late in the summer, didn’t water them enough and only 12 survived. What a buggar…. However;
By the end of the following year those 12 that survived turned out to be monster plants.
I harvested more rhizomes from Doogs, farm and filled out the field again the following year. I love these Hops.
I went back to the site to gather more Rhizomes for the 2016 planting season and unfortunately the neighboring farmer had decided to widen the trail so he could get his equipment through easier. The crown was destroyed…. I almost cried… A part of Ontario history was destroyed forever. However, fortunately for us and the craft beer community they live on… I will be propagating more of them for our farm as the crowns allow me to do so. There will be no root stock for this plant available for sale. Sorry…
I’ve been told by several experts that they are of Noble decent.
The Alpha a Beta Acids varied quite dramatically from year to year. It will be interesting to see were they weigh in at for 2017.
